TOKYO -- A magnitude-5.4 earthquake has rattled central Japan and at least seven people are hurt.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit Thursday in Nagano, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Tokyo. The quake was just four kilometers (2.5 miles) deep. No tsunami warning was issued, the agency said.
Nagano fire department official Sadahiko Furusawa said seven people were injured in the quake, but none was in critical condition.
Japan is located on the Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines spanning the Pacific Basin, and is regularly hit by earthquakes. The nation is recovering from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, which left more than 22,000 people dead or missing in northeastern Japan.

Five years ago you could be forgiven for thinking that the best networkers only used face-to-face networking methods and tools. In fact, it was only this week, that I was having a discussion, rather ironically on Twitter, with a coach who told me that the best networkers only used face-to-face networking. Perhaps even worse than this rather short-sighted view, was her belief that small business owners didn?t have time to be using online networking as they were too busy running their own business. Mmmm. Let?s just say that I didn?t agree, and I will explain why in this article.
In my experience, many business owners fall into the trap of thinking online OR face-to-face networking, rather than combining the two different types of networking for maximum effect. Did you know that LinkedIn and Twitter are fantastic tools for keeping in touch with people after meeting them at an event? Wouldn?t your life as a networker be SO much easier if you could actually book some time to meet up with someone at a networking event ? rather than leaving it all to chance? Did you know that you can normally use LinkedIn & Twitter to make contact with someone at a face-to-face networking event, BEFORE the event?
Let?s talk about the time pressures which you face as a female and a business owner. If you are anything like me your to do list is never ending ? and with the typical demands that your business and family places on you it is not always possible to get to a physical networking event. But, your marketing and business plans rely on your growing and maintaining a network?
This is where online networking has the edge over face-to-face networking. It is always possible to indulge in some online networking in the odd 5 minutes of the day.
Many female business owners are fantastic at gaining opportunities via social media and so have discounted the possibilities that face-to-face networking can bring. Face-to-face networking doesn?t have to mean attending a formal networking group. Do you have your networking hat on when at social events? You never know what possibilities a hen weekend may offer? At a recent 40th birthday party for my brother-in-law, I received a great lead from another one of my relations. When attending training events, have you got your networking hat on? Who on the course list would you like to stay in touch with after the event?
Many people think because I am a huge advocate of online networking, that I don?t see the value or point of face-to-face networking. They couldn?t be more wrong.
A face-to-face physical meeting can generate trust far quicker than a purely online relationship. Indeed, it is rare to find a very strong business relationship which hasn?t been cemented by some time spent physically together.
And even, if a face-to-face meeting is impractical ? a video call or phone call is better than an e-mail or purely Twitter relationship. Until you have actually taken that step to have a real time conversation, referrals and opportunities are unlikely to flow from that person.
With the arrival of social networking, a networker?s tool kit is now huge. But, just as you wouldn?t use a hammer to crack a nut, knowing which tool for which job is the key to networking effectively and efficiently.
There are definitely times when face-to-face has the edge, and times when online networking is better. The trouble is that most networkers get into a comfort zone, and tend to stick with what they know - and for many networkers that means being blinkered and choosing online OR face-to-face networking.
in my research for 'The Financial Times Guide To Business Networking', I found that the most effective networkers were both curious, but also willing to experiment. They didn't see any boundaries between personal and professional, online and off line networking - they were always open for networking, and tirelessly looking for the best ways to make and keep a valuable connection.
What do you think?

Yesterday, George Anthony took the stand and defended himself against allegations that he carried on an affair with a woman who was helping him search for his grandchild, Caylee.
Today, he implied that daughter Casey is behind Caylee's death.
"The car smelled like human decomposition. Caylee was last seen with Casey," George testified, growing emotional. "One and one adds up to two in my mind. I was trying to put all the stories together. "
Casey Anthony shook her head and scribbled notes to her legal team as her father answered questions.
George said he felt a "deep, deep hurt inside" when Caylee's remains were found a couple years ago. He even attempted suicide soon after because "it just seemed like the right time to go, to be with Caylee. To spend time with Caylee. I didn't want to be in this world anymore."
The defense, who is trying to make jurors believe George abused his daughter and that somehow explains her changing story, asked the witness if he ever touched Casey inappropriately.
"Sir, I never would do anything to harm my daughter in that way," he said.
Denise Richards has become a mom for the third time after she adopted a newborn baby girl, whom she named after her late mother.

And now she?s added another little girl to her family! There will be lots of estrogen in that home!
Denise?s rep confirms the adoption, stating, ?Eloise Joni Richards is named after Denise?s mom (Joni), and Denise and her daughters Sami and Lola chose the name Eloise. Denise and Eloise?s big sisters couldn?t be happier and feel incredibly blessed.?
Denise?s mother passed away four years ago after battling cancer.
Normally, it's actual athletes that are taking steroids to bulk up, not actors playing athletes.
Charlie Sheen has just admitted in a new Sports Illustrated interview that he decided to take performance enhancers for his role as Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn in 'Major League.'
"Let's just say that I was enhancing my performance a little bit. It was the only time I ever did steroids... I did them for like six or eight weeks. You can print this, I don't give a f**k. My fastball went from 79 [miles-per-hour] to like 85."
Sheen went on to say that he quit the drug after losing control of his temper.
While on steroids, he almost got into a fight at a bar after some patrons were making fun of the wacky haircut he got for the role, "I didn't like the haircut because it generated so many comments in bars. I've got enough of that already. Add that to the mix, and it's a recipe for a fistfight," he says.
Mel Gibson and his estranged wife Robyn have been in divorce discussions since 2009.
LOS ANGELES -- An attorney for Mel Gibson's estranged wife says the former couple has nearly finalized their divorce.
Attorney Laura Wasser told a judge Tuesday that the pair have resolved all their issues and are doing some "final polishes" on the paperwork.
Wasser says the couple should have a judgment ready by Aug. 30.
Gibson's attorney agreed with Wasser's assessment
Robyn Gibson filed for divorce in April 2009, just months before the Oscar winner's then-girlfriend gave birth to an infant daughter. He indicated in court filings that the couple separated in 2006.
No details of how the couple's assets will be divided was discussed Tuesday, and Wasser indicated those details would remain private. The former couple have seven children together, but only one who is under the age of 18.

After spending 35 days confined to her Venice, CA townhouse, Lindsay Lohan is a free woman.
The ?Mean Girls? babe was released from house arrest earlier this morning (June 29) and was later spotted heading out to chip away at her 480 hours of community service.
Carrying a box of muffins to take to the local women's shelter, LiLo said a few quick words to TMZ, as she joyously proclaimed, ""I'm excited to start community service and focus on my work."
Lohan's spokesman, Steve Honig, told the Associated Press that the actress is "very focused" on resuming her community service at a downtown Los Angeles women's shelter as well as cleaning the county morgue.
Last week, the troubled actress - who turns 25-years-old this weekend (July 2) - appeared in court after failing a sobriety test earlier in the month, however, Judge Stephanie Sautner determined that while Miss Lohan did test positive for alcohol, she did not violate her probation due to the fact that a previous judge only required drug and alcohol testing between January 3 - February 25, 2011.
Republicans are perpetrating a fraud. They say they're concerned about reducing government deficits. But you don't need to look at how they treat all of the country's biggest corporations (which is extremely well) or even how they kowtow to its richest 400 families, who now have 6900 times as much income as the average household.
You only need to look at the way they treat 25 people.
The top 25 hedge fund managers in the United States collectively earned $22 billion last year, and yet they have their own cushy set of tax rules. If they operated under the same rules that apply to other people -- police officers, for example, or teachers -- the country could cut its national deficit by as much as $44 billion in the next ten years.
We're not talking about "raising taxes on the rich," either -- although that's an excellent idea. (There's an automated petition here that will encourage your representative to do just that.) This money could be raised simply by removing a tax loophole that protects hedge fund managers. And that's not counting all the other people who run hedge funds. We'd get that $44 billion from just 25 people. They can certainly afford it, and at least one of them (George Soros, #2 on the list) undoubtedly would approve.
But they won't do it. Instead of taking a simple step that could net as much as $4.4 billion per year, House Republicans have passed a budget that cuts $30 million for flood control and emergency funds that would help people avoid being hurt or killed in storms like the ones we've seen in New Orleans, Birmingham, the Midwest, and all across the country. They voted to cut $336 million from the National Oceanographic and Aeronautical Administration to track and predict violent storms.
You could call their bill the "Tony Montana budget," too, since it cuts funds from all the law enforcement activities that Al Pacino's character in Scarface loathed and feared: $74 million from the FBI. $256 million from "State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance." $600 million from COPS, another program that gives grants for state and local policing. More than half a billion from the IRS, which is a giveaway to tax cheats that also reduces future collections -- which will make the deficit worse.
They even want to cut $330 million from the Treasury Forfeiture Fund, a self-sustaining program that administers all the assets seized by U.S. Customs, the Secret Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the IRS Criminal Investigation unit, and the Coast Guard. Tony Montana would approve.
Oh -- they want to cut the budget for "food safety and inspection services," too. You could pay for all these cuts by just eliminating a tax loophole for these hedge fund managers -- and you'd still have more than $2 billion left over. And that's every year.
From 25 people.
Now the Republicans are going after Social Security and Medicare. Their new budget eliminates Medicare (yes, it does) and replaces it with vouchers that will only cover a fraction of their medical costs. The Congressional Budget Office reports that people who reach Medicare age in 2030 will have to pay twenty thousand dollars more per person as a result. Know how many of those people could get the old Medicare coverage if you taxed those 25 hedge fund managers the same way everybody else is taxed?
All of them.
These programs are unsustainable, they say. Well, the runaway costs in our health system are unsustainable, but controlling them would force the country to confront the greed motive in US healthcare. So that's off the table for the Republicans, too. And Social Security doesn't contribute to the deficit at all -- they just don't like it.
If you took away this tax loophole for hedge fund managers, you could actually increase Social Security benefits by more than $1,000 per year for every baby boomer. In 2010 dollars, that comes to an average benefit increase of nearly 10 percent.
And that's just from 25 people.
But wait, the Republicans will say. That would kill jobs, they'll say. These people are "job creators" and "wealth creators," they'll say. No, they're not. More often than not, in fact, they're job destroyers. They make their money by betting for or against certain events -- literally "hedging their bets" -- and on more than one occasion they've been accused of creating the negative event they're betting against. Even if they don't do anything unscrupulous, these negative bets make it harder for certain ventures to succeed.
Here's a simple answer to those Republicans: If these tax cuts create jobs, where are the jobs?
In many cases these hedge fund managers owe their wealth to us, the taxpayers who play by the rules, and not to their own business acumen. This account in the New YorkTimes, for example, describes how one of them made billions by betting that the government would rescue banks from their own lousy judgment and bad investments. Now the Republicans are willing to shut down the entire government to protect these 25 people and a few thousand others just like them.
Yesterday we discussed the fact that most Republican voters want to raise taxes on the rich to affect the deficit, and that Democrats have been slow to push this issue. We encouraged you to express your support for this "shared" approach to reducing the deficit. That needs to happen as part of any deficit deal.
So does the closing of this "billionaire's loophole." If the loophole was closed and the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy were finally ended, in fact, we could cut the defict by another $8.8 billion over the next ten years -- just from these 25 people.
So don't buy the fraud. Encourage your representatives to sign on to the "shared" approach. And imagine: If we can get 25 people to pay their fair share, we can ask everyone else who's profited from our recent miseries to pay their fair share. That's how we can restore the American Dream - one billionaire at a time.

[1] Technical comments: My estimates are based on the assumption that this year's earnings for the top 25 hedge fund managers will hold steady for the next ten years. Their 2010 income was down significantly from previous record highs, but as the portfolios say: Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
I have also assumed, based on previously disclosed information, that most of the money earned by these hedge fund managers falls under the "carried interest" loophole rather than as straight management fees.
A judge has granted Brooke Mueller to get direct child support payments from Charlie Sheen.
LOS ANGELES -- A judge has ordered Charlie Sheen's former bosses to garnish $55,000 a month for child support from any payments they make to the former "Two and a Half Men" star.
The former couple was divorced on May 2, about two months after Warner Bros' fired Sheen from "Men." The actor and the studio have been fighting over payments ever since.
The hefty monthly payments are intended to support the Sheens' twin sons and were part of a divorce settlement they reached earlier this year.
The actor's spokesman Larry Solters declined to comment. Brooke Sheen's attorney did not immediately return a phone message.
The Oscar winner, who split with longtime beau Stuart Townsend last year, says she believes that marriage is a "divine right." But it turns out that it's a right she has no interest in exercising regardless of federal prohibitions.
"Some would say because I came from a very troubled marriage," Theronsays in an interview airing Wednesday on Piers Morgan Tonight, explaining whytying the knot doesn't appeal to her. "My parents did not have a good marriage, but I don't think it's that."
"It's a divine right," she says of the right toget hitched, which last week was extended to gay couples in New York,"and when government starts to tell us who can love and what is good love, whether government or a government built on a certain religion, I do have a problem with that. If you want to bring it back to the politics...I do have a problem with the fact that our government hasn't stepped up enough to make this federal, to make this legal."
"I think everybody has that right," Theron says.
But A didn't necessarily lead to B when it comes to her own personal life, the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman star adds.
"I'll be the first to say, here on your show, marriage?before I felt this way about this issue?was never something that was important to me. I don't know the exact reason for that," Theron says. She acknowledges that her parents were not happily married, but she doesn't think that's necessarily the case, considering she knows plenty of happy couples who came from broken homes.
"I really want for myself a long-term relationship," she continues, "and I have been in long-term relationships...That's the kind of union that I want. The actual ceremony is not something that is important to me?but I see the importance for other people."
Somehow, even among the most arch traditionalists, we suspect that there are plenty of dudes out there who will be happy to abide.
Thank God Almighty, Lindsay Lohan is free at last ? but there?s still one question ? can she pull a Robert Downey Jr. and rebuild her career? And Tracy Morgan goes from gays to "retards" -- blasting the mentally disabled in his new comedy routine. Is it possible to forgive him a second time?

It belonged to four-time Academy Award winner Katharine Hepburn!
According to Zillow, "The Hepburn home sits on Long Island Sound with a private dock and beach.
"The six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half-bath home was completely renovated, including upgrades to the kitchen and bathrooms. With 8,300 square feet of living space, the beach home has high ceilings, architectural detailing as well as large windows and French doors that offer expansive water views."
The home faced severe damages from a Category 5 hurricane in 1938, but Hepburn loved the house so much that it was rebuilt within a year.
Hepburn passed away at her estate in 2003 at age 96.
In 2004, Barbara and Frank Sciame, the chief executive of F.J. Sciame Construction, bought the estate purely to renovate and sell it, but they ended up keeping it as a summer home for several years.
However, they split the property into three different lots. The plot containing Hepburn's home is the priciest at $18 million, but the entire 3.5-acre property can be purchased for $28 million.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- A young emperor penguin that turned up on a New Zealand beach won't be getting a free ride all the way back to its Antarctic home ? but the bird's human friends will at least help it get a little closer.
The penguin ? affectionately dubbed Happy Feet ? drew intense interest after being spotted on North Island's Peka Peka Beach, about 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from its natural habitat in Antarctica. The creature's health quickly declined when it began eating sand and sticks, but the bird is beginning to recover.
Wildlife officials have been trying to figure out how the 3-foot (80 centimeter) -tall bird will return home. They initially dismissed the idea of transporting it to Antarctica because of logistical difficulties and the fear that it could transmit infections picked up during its New Zealand vacation to other penguins.
On Wednesday, an advisory group headed by the Department of Conservation decided officials will help the penguin get part of the way home by releasing it into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand ? and letting it swim the rest of the way.
"The reason for not returning the penguin directly to Antarctica is that emperor penguins of this age are usually found north of Antarctica on pack ice and in the open ocean," the department's biodiversity spokesman Peter Simpson said.
The area where it will be released is on the northern edge of the region where young emperor penguins are known to live. Simpson said he was unsure how far the penguin would have to swim before reaching its final destination.
Happy Feet, nicknamed after the 2006 animated movie, was discovered on Peka Peka Beach last week ? the first time an emperor penguin has been seen in the wild in New Zealand in 44 years. Experts aren't sure if it's male or female.
The penguin is recovering well at Wellington Zoo, where it underwent a medical procedure on Monday to help flush out the sand it swallowed after apparently mistaking it for snow. Doctors managed to remove about half the sand from its digestive system, and zoo spokeswoman Kate Baker said X-rays showed the penguin was passing the rest of the sand naturally.
The creature appears to be doing well and is being kept in isolation in an air-conditioned room filled with large blocks of ice, Baker said.
"The plan from now on is to let him rest, feed him and X-ray him again on Friday or Saturday to see how much sand has passed," Baker said.
Officials are still hammering out logistics for the penguin's return trip home, and said it won't be released until its health has recovered. Until then, it will remain at the zoo.

As recently as last month, ?Training Day? director Antoine Fuqua was slated to direct a biopic about the life of Tupac Shakur. Now 24 Frames has learned that the director has stepped away from that film and is instead poised to join a movie that revolves around a different hip-hop artist: Eminem.
Fuqua is set to come aboard ?Southpaw,? a fictional boxing drama written and conceived by ?Sons of Anarchy? creator Kurt Sutter and starring the Detroit rapper, said a source briefed on the film who requested anonymity because he wasn?t authorized to speak about it publicly. The DreamWorks film aims to shoot later this year. Fuqua has no formal deal in place as yet. [Update, 6:52 p.m.: A person close to Fuqua said the two still must work out a number of deal points.]
A studio spokeswoman declined comment.
The project?s progress is good news for fans of Eminem, who received acclaim for his turn as a talented rapper in 2002?s ?8 Mile? but has not taken a lead movie part since. The man born Marshall Mathers does have a propensity for working with top-tier filmmakers: ?8 Mile? was directed by Curtis Hanson, and Eminem also appeared in this year?s well-regarded Chrysler Super Bowl spot, which was helmed by decorated music-video director Samuel Bayer.

Ladies night out with Salman
Salman Khan?s Being Human show at the HDIL India Couture Week 2010 on Saturday night was a feast for the eyes as the superstar dished out eight oomphy ladies of Tinseltown ? including the top three actresses of today, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra ? on the runway. Kareena and Priyanka were seen holding hands when they came for the curtain call with Salman and thus managed to dispel the gossip of any sort of animosity. The others to sashay down the ramp were Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Bipasha Basu, Karisma Kapur and Sushmita Sen as Salman decoded fashion from 1920s to present times in a grand musical-like choreography. High on oomph quotient, the show only showcased eight ensembles but the drama ? the provocative dancing and the extravagant opulent props, made sure that everybody was dazzled. In Dabangg style Sallu had distributed whistles to everyone giving them virtually the licence to express their excitement when the leading ladies soared temperature on the catwalk. Preity opened the show strutting in a sexy black dress ? a provocateur that certainly made the audiences get going about the 1920s. The embodiment of 30s was the evidently slimmed down Katrina who was greeted by tap dancers and models dressed as the mafia of that era. Rani portrayed the 40s ? she glided in with Mughal-e-Azam clip and Pakeezah?s iconic track Chalte Chalte playing at the backdrop. Her nawabi tehzeeb was an instant hit as she bowed in front of the audiences in a vintage ?
She?s been busy promoting her new book, ?Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far? and Bristol Palin was on ?Fox & Friends? this morning (June 28) to talk candidly about her experiences on the campaign trail.
The 20-year-old single mom noted that while her family experienced plenty of drama as her mom ran for Vice President, she still had a good time.
?I thought John McCain was a great guy. I think that some of his staff threw my mom under the bus, but I had a wonderful experience and I think my mom is a great politician.
As for McCain?s daughter Meghan, ?We definitely butted heads, but I just wanted to note in my book that we both come from completely different backgrounds. We?re both the children of politicians but obviously that defined her and that doesn?t define me.?

Part II
Pemo: So the big question obviously with my interviews is: How have you found the investing scene & investors towards you as females? You've been in the Valley obviously your whole life, have you noticed any bias or do you notice that it's tougher for you girls to actually pitch for funding?
Elizabeth: You know it's really hard to say.
I really only have a couple of experiences in fund raising. First time around was with my failed startup & everybody said no! I think there were people who would have said yes without any hesitation if we actually had a market & an interesting business.
Second time around we've done things very differently. We actually haven't actively raised money but people have actually come to us with offers. So it's different this time around! So now we have more of a choice. I haven't actually noticed a comparison. It's not like I have a twin who is a male that I can compare notes with or anything.
Pemo: You've got nothing to compare it to.
Dave: Did you have any different experiences? You guys were in Boston for a little bit & comparing the market environment there versus here? Or at least some reactions?
Pemo: Yes tell us about that.
Elizabeth: Yeah so we heard a lot of entrepreneurs in Boston say that it was a lot harder out there. I actually know a number of entrepreneurs who have moved here for that reason. But we personally have not experienced that.
Pemo: OK, OK & as regards women entrepreneurs in Boston. Would they be finding it tougher? I know Fred Destin said when I interviewed him that they'd had a big conference a few days before & there was one woman there from Krush (her website). But there was only one woman in the whole audience of 50 or 60 people.
Elizabeth: There are definitely fewer but it's hard to say percentage wise because I think the startup scene is a lot smaller out there. But there are more times when I'm there, that I'm the only woman at an event.
Pemo: OK, ok so you notice it more there?
Elizabeth: Yeah.
Dave: Although strangely I think we funded 3 startups out of Boston & all of them have women on their team.
Pemo: Oh interesting, it's taking advantage of the situation
Dave: It's so weird again! I think it was our mentors there who funnelled those across. One of whom is also a woman.
Pemo: Great ok.
Prerna: I personally think that it's changing really rapidly. I do think in the traditional vc space there is some bias. I don't think it's intentional. I don't think that these are jerks that are sexist & they watch a woman come into the office & they decide right away that they're not going to fund her. I think a lot of it is what Dave was saying earlier, which is that you fund what you know. It's a human tendency to look for heuristics. Their brains very quickly look for generalizations that they can make to indicate whether a person is going to be successful or not.
When they've seen people year after year fit a certain pattern: a certain age, they're white, they're male, they dress a certain way, they have certain mannerisms: facial expressions or things that they say, their tone of voice. These things indicate success to them.
When a woman comes in, maybe speaking more softly or with different body language, I think it's just harder. You don't have those same indicators that say ok this person is going to be successful, the market is going to consider this person important. And there's some validity to it actually, because it's not just the vcs that think that. All the business partners & everyone else in the market also use those same heuristics. I think that's the reason that it happens implicitlty. But it's changing! The way that its changing is that as more women come into the market, as more women try & prove themselves, as some visionary investors give those women chances (Laughter), it changes! Everyone's heuristics change & it's happening very rapidly right now.
Pemo: Yes I would say definitely last year & this year has been the peak. It just feels like a big shift is happening, doesn't it? And we're in the middle of that?
Elizabeth: Yeah, you can definitely feel it!
Pemo: And obviously we have path finders like Dave here.
Dave: Ahh I would still say that I've just had the good fortune of investing in a couple of women CEOs early: Rashmi Sinha @Slideshare probably 3 or 4 years ago. Victoria Ransom @Wildfire a couple of years ago.
Both of them made a lot & both of them are doing really well. So it was much easier to continue doing more of that having those as successful examples.
Pemo: Tell me what was your experience as regards raising funding? Have you experienced part of these biases or challenges for yourself?
Prerna: In a way I've had a similar experience to you guys. This is my second startup. My first one failed. I had a ton of vc meetings for the first one & we weren't able to raise vc money. We did raise angel money for the first one & I did feel a lot of times in some of those meetings some of that bias. Some of it was obviously: the company failed so maybe there was some validity also that had nothing to do with the fact that I was a woman.
Dave: Those assholes were right! (Laughter)
Prerna: So for the second startup, it's going a lot better. We haven't raised vc money. We've had a few vc meetings but we were never really interested in raising venture.
Dave: Sorry just to clarify I'm a vc, you have raised vc money.,
Prerna: I still think that Dave is an angel.
Dave: Those damn vcs. Shit you're invested without me figuring it out. (Laughter)
Prerna: I feel that angels & angel types tend to be much more open in general. But I think it's changing & I don't perceive any barrier for our company when we're ready to go out & raise some money, even with all of our red flags.
Dave: I think it's not easy doing a startup, raising money. All of this is low probability for everyone. I really think it's much more based on just seeing role models & examples in front of you that do it.
For either the investor or the entrepreneur having someone that you have personal experience with who's been successful, either raising money or getting a business off the ground, just makes it a lot easier for you to envision yourself doing it. Particularly if they're the same shape, size & color as you makes it a lot easier to envision yourself doing it.
Pemo: And you've got some mentors on board who are women, I gather?
Dave: Yeah that has been intentional.
Pemo: So that must be quite helpful as regards them connecting with younger women?
Dave: It's still a minority, probably around 15 to 20% of our mentors are women. Some of them are founders also but some of them are vcs who are women & other successful business owners who are women & people with operational expertise either in engineering or online. Yes so construction of the mentor group is probably a lot more intentional than the portfolio in terms of gender & diversity & language.
Pemo: OK so here's the big question for you girls. How is it working with Dave? (Laughter) Don't hold back! Give us a bit of honesty here.
Prerna: I think it's apparent even just from this interview. Dave is really open, he's really honest! I don't notice any difference.
I'm not reminded all the time that I'm a female entrepreneur. I just feel like I'm an entrepreneur. The fact that I'm a woman is not really an important part of my identity as an entrepreneur. I think that's the key thing, I think that's really important.
Pemo: And so you'd recommend another female entrepreneur to pitch to Dave?
Prerna: Absolutely. (Laughter)
Pemo: If she had a good business?
Dave: Right
Pemo: And there was a win:win for him?
Dave: On the risk of tarnishing my image: I think it's impossible to completely ignore the human sexuality issues & other sensitive issues in all contexts.
Pemo: Thank you for talking about that.
Dave: So Prerna being a very attractive entrepreneur is not something that I've ignored completely. I think you always have to fight biases one way or another when you're making investments. Sometimes its a positive & sometimes its a negative but it does enter into the equation. I think if I believe in what I'm doing as a venture capitalist, you take risk in all forms & match it. That's part of the equation. So that's really the best thing in investing in couples or music or other parts of the world. We do because we think there are successful entrepreneurs everywhere, all shapes, sizes, colors, whatever. Occasionally we think, when other people don't think that's true, we also even want to do that more. Both philosophically that's true & from a very selfish investment point of view it's also true.
Pemo: Fantastic, thank you.
Prerna: One thing that I just want to say about this whole issue of sexuality which I think is really important.
Pemo: I'm so glad someone's brought it up!
Prerna: I think that this is one issue that definitely affects women from a really early age. The reason we don't have more women in technology & as a result more women in entrepreneurship is because there's this tension. And again it's a human tension, individuals are not bad people, they're not doing it on purpose. I think when you're a woman being attractive is one of the most important things you can do as a woman, as a human female. For whatever reason, being intelligent & being powerful, these things are at odds with being sexually attractive for a woman. We are very sensitive to this at a young age. I think if you have to choose between the two, a lot of women go towards being attractive. That is one thing that I hope will change. It's something that we're fighting against with evolution. But I think we are capable of changing that with more role models & understanding that you can be more than just one thing. You can be a human being & there are different parts of that. If you're a woman & you want to be sexually attractive, it's ok to do that & also to try & be successful & powerful.
Pemo: And so you think that that may be one of the reasons that's holding women entrepreneurs back?
Prerna: I do & I don't think it's explicit. I think it just happens very early on.
Dave: It may also even be a bias on the entrepreneur's side & investors who won't invest in women where there's a concern that tension may arise?
Pemo: That that may become an issue? It is interesting because no other investor or founder has spoken about this issue. So thanks Dave for bringing it up! Although it's the most obvious issue? So it's just interesting that everyone has skirted around that. I appreciate that.
Pemo: I was wondering how it is for you guys working with Dave? Can you give us some feedback?
Elizabeth: I would agree with everything you've said. One thing about the gender thing is that Dave has a reputation for cussing.
Pemo: Oh has he, I haven't heard that??? (sarcasm)
Elizabeth: But he cusses less at the women than at the men. I haven't done any analytics about this but... that would be my guess.
Dave: That's new information.
Pemo: So he holds back a bit?
Elizabeth: I would guess that, I don't know?
Prerna: We just get more respect!
Elizabeth: Or maybe we need less cussing?
Pemo: Yeah maybe you're just much better than the guys?
Dave: I've gotta do some navel gazing on that one. (Laughter) I know I've written a couple of posts that really don't make me seem like the most ardent defender of women's rights. One in particular where Rashmi came to my defense, but a bunch of other people were ripping on me for it.
Elizabeth: I don't think I've seen that one, I'll have to look at that one.
Dave: Yeah something about nuts & faces which I won't get into now.
Pemo: Well look thanks so much all of you for your time today, really appreciate it. Really appreciate your feedback, also for that very pertinent piece about sexuality which obviously is a core issue in this. So thanks to all of you.
