Cheryl Cole is back in the UK after getting the axe from the US X Factor and is feeling distraught and confused.

'I still haven't been given a reason,' she told a friend. 'Why did Simon Cowell do this to me?'

Cheryl has been offered her old position back as a judge on the UK show on a bigger salary but is unsure about accepting the offer.

'Do you want �another job on more money? It's a simple question: Yes or No?' Simon asked her, an insider tells the Sunday Mirror.

But Cheryl, 27, still hasn't given him an answer and TV bosses can't wait because auditions start on Wednesday in Birmingham.

'Her life has been turned upside down,' says the pal. 'At the moment she is trying to work out what to do with her life.

'It's a nightmare. Cheryl is in pieces - she hasn't stopped crying.'

N-Dubz star Tulisa and Kelly Rowlands will join Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh on the judging panel if Cheryl, who's now being managed by Will.i.am, doesn't say yes.

It's believed the Girls Aloud star is still likely to bank her full �1.2million US X Factor fee.

Cheryl's nervousness and failure to 'mesh' with the other judges - including Paula Abdul - is believed to be the reason for her sacking during a 'trial period' - rather than her Geordie accent.

Losing confidence, she's also reported to have suffered panic attacks.�

Representatives for Cheryl and The X Factor have yet to comment.��
