Kate Middleton and Prince William married on 29 April

Prince William's London base with new wife Kate Middleton will be an apartment in Kensington Palace - the royal residence where he grew up with his brother Harry and their late mother Princess Diana.

The couple will split their time between the city bolthole and their Anglesey cottage, where RAF search and rescue pilot Wills, 28, is based.

'Kate and William love the peace and quiet of Anglesey but they can't just stay holed up there for the next 2 years,' says a royal source.

'The public want to see them, and it makes sense for them to have a base in the capital.

'They both love London and have lots of friends there and it's a good place for Kate to get stuck into thinking about what charities she wants to promote and other work she might take on.'

Up until now, Kate and William have been staying at Clarence House in a bachelor pad Wills once shared with Prince Harry, 26, but will move in to their new home in the next month or so.

But Kate, 29, and Will's new 'relatively small' central London flat will not be a permanent home, as it's not considered practical for family life.

'We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's official London residence will temporarily become a property at Kensington Palace,' a St James' Palace spokesman tells the Daily Mirror.

'Options for long-term solutions are still being considered.'
