Authorities ID man fatally shot by undercover detective in downtown LA

LOS ANGELES - Authorities today identified a man who was fatally shot by an undercover detective during a confrontation in downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth and Spring streets, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. Dale Garrett, 51, died at a hospital.

Garrett, a transient and parolee, allegedly approached undercover detectives and offered to sell drugs to one of them, police said.

"Garrett then verbally threatened to kill the detective, while simultaneously retrieving a seven-inch folding saw," police said. The detective then shot him, police said.
