James Durbin goes home: Readers react
Say what you will about the 10th season of American Idol, it's serving up more unexpected eliminations than the last several seasons combined. James Durbin's ouster Thursday generated some of the most heated reaction in Idol Chatter history. What did readers think of this turn of events? Here's a sample:
ak99669: It's a sad day for Idol. I won't be watching the rest of the season.
JohnCDoe: I'm going to miss James. More than anyone in years he's the competitor I most looked forward to seeing what he'd come up with for each week's performance. Even if I didn't always find the results perfect, he certainly brought something new to the Idol stage.
be22994734fce507: This is the first time I have watched a season of American Idol. I have been fascinated and shocked by the process and voting. And now I see how unjust a "popular" vote can be. James is the best. Hands down. This is just wrong! I do think Scotty, Lauren and Haley are talented, but James has the kind of special quality that distinguishes him as an artist. He is original, has perfect pitch, understands showmanship, has guts, and gets it right every time. I truly hope someone out there, who understands true talent, will pick up on James and help him with his career. What a loss if James falls out of the public eye! He is a rare and unique musician -- nothing ordinary about this man. So sad that what the millions of public voters really want is comfort and something non-threatening instead of an artist and individual who will bring us musical work that rises above pop tunes and sad, country ballads.
littleriles: I'm so sad. I really wish James the best. He has overcome so much to do what he has done and is a true inspiration. He is such a talented entertainer. I hope he gets signed to a great label and achieves great success. He has earned my respect and certainly is a class act.
kkron: It's Scotty's to lose now. I thought from the beginning it would be between Scotty and James. And it really didn't waiver throughout. Both were true to themselves and stood out each week. Biggest shock to me since Chris Daughtry went out in week 4 years ago.
CountryMack: Oddly, the thought that James could go home this week did cross my mind ... Chris Daughtry went home this week also, but I figured for sure it'd be one of the girls. I'm glad it wasn't. Durbin is better off not winning ... just like with Daughtry, the people who will buy his music are more likely to accept him now. Metal is for outcasts, and an American Idol winner cannot be an outcast. Durbin's going to be a millionaire soon enough. So will Scotty.
Wellopayne: So much for the great male bias theory! Personally, I don't think James departure is a great loss. That incessant screeching just isn't my cup of tea. Yet I have to admit, he was/is a showman.
dazed: Adam Lambert saved Haley. All he had to do was praise her, and suddenly the whole Glam Nation was voting for her. James set a great example for millions of kids with disabilities.
IdolGuy96: Here's the thing: I didn't want Lauren to be voted off. I really didn't want Haley to be voted off. There was absolutely no chance Scotty would be voted off. That only leaves one. I'd prefer Scotty get voted off, but that's not happening, so I'm not very upset. Don't think I hate James though. He's given many incredible performances throughout the season. ... I'm fine with this top 3. It's not my first choice, but how often is that the case?
