Earlier this month, all-around showman Nick Cannon had a bit of an embarrassment on his hands when his brother Gabriel was arrested for allegedly robbing and assaulting a man and his teen son who he had been working with on a reality show. Of course, Nick isn't the only celebrity to have an embarrassing sibling, and ironically his songbird wife, Mariah Carey, also has a sibling who has been in trouble with the law.
Alison Carey Scott is a 49-year-old former drug addict and alcoholic who has been HIV positive since the 1990s. She's also been arrested for prostitution and is still offering herself as an "escort" on websites.
She told the National Enquirer that she's been forced to do this because "my family refuses to help me financially. For weeks, I was driving in a vehicle with practically no brakes. It was unsafe, so I reached out to my family for help, but they basically ignored me. I wish I didn't have to make a living by hooking up with strangers on the Internet, but sometimes I feel like I don't have any other choice."
Although she did admit that her superstar sister has paid for countless stays in rehab.
Ronnie Ramsay, the younger brother of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, was homeless in 2009. The 43-year-old was photographed sleeping on the streets. He'd returned to England after serving a 10-month sentence in Indonesia for possessing heroin.
In Gordon's memoir, 'Humble Pie,' he writes of the pain he has gone through dealing with his brother's addiction. "It's the one thing I feel I've failed at. I find it hard knowing that there's nothing I can do to help." He also revealed that he gave his brother money for heroin to ensure his brother's appearance at their father's funeral. "I thought it was better for him to be there and off his face than not there at all," he wrote.
The star of 'Hell's Kitchen' has been through hell with his sibling, who has threatened to kill him and his children to get money. "He's tried everything. Death threats. Calls at midnight from various people saying they know what time my kids leave school. Things like that, which you shouldn't have to have in your life."
Ramsay has paid for at least five stints in rehab but now has finally stopped speaking to his troubled brother.
Matthew Nolan -- brother of Christopher Nolan, the English director who helmed 'Dark Knight' and 'Inception' -- was arrested in 2009 by the FBI in connection to the murder of an American businessman in Costa Rica. He was already being looked at by the Chicago police for his involvement in a $700,000 check-kiting scam. When Nolan met bankers, he used his brother's position by offering rides and pictures in the Batmobile.
Tove Christensen, who was a producer on 'Shattered Glass,' a movie starring his brother Hayden Christensen, was arrested for assault in 2009. He was having a tiff with his girlfriend when he decided to take off in his car. Trouble was when his girlfriend tried to get into the car he stepped on the gas and dragged the unidentified girl 30 feet. In 2010 he pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor battery. He was sentenced to one year of counseling, put on probation for three years and made to serve a 20-day Hollywood beautification project.
In her 2009 autobiography, 'Official Book Club Selection,' comedienne Kathy Griffin wrote candidly about her older brother Kenny who was in and out of jail, a drug addict and physically abusive to his wife and girlfriends.
She also says that although he didn't molest her as a child he was inappropriate with her.
Griffin writes that he would crawl into her bed when she was 8 and whisper "sweet nothings" into her ear like a lover.
Although her troubled brother was never prosecuted for pedophilia, Griffin firmly believes he was guilty of it and chose to break off contact with him, which caused a huge rift in the family. For years the comic didn't see her brother until one day on the way to an audition she stopped him panhandling on the freeway holding a sign that said, "HOMELESS, NEED FOOD, NEED MONEY." Kenny eventually died of pneumonia in his mother Maggie's arms.
In 2002, John Draper Witherspoon, brother of Reese Witherspoon, was arrested in their hometown of Nashville, Tenn., for aggravated burglary and sexual battery. A young woman claimed that she fell asleep on her sofa with the door unlocked when her neighbor Witherspoon entered her home.
"I woke up with him kissing my face and my neck ... (He) had his hand down my underwear and was trying to get my pants off when I woke up," the woman alleged.
Witherspoon has also been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
When the 'Sweet Home Alabama' star was asked about her brother, she succinctly replied, "No comment."
Roger Clinton was pardoned by his older half-brother, President Bill Clinton for a 1985 conviction related to cocaine that had put him in the slammer for a year. The pardon means he is no longer a convicted criminal.
